Nine theses submitted for judging

The KNMT has launched the preliminary round of its annual Bachelor Thesis Award 2026. Script coordinators from the three Dutch dental faculties have submitted nine bachelor theses from the previous academic year for expert evaluation. A jury of three dentists and one researcher will assess each thesis against multiple criteria, including whether the topic is forward-thinking and innovative, and whether it has practical value for daily clinical work.

Bonus points for KNMT priorities

Theses addressing one or more of the KNMT's strategic focus areas receive bonus points. These priorities include prevention, sustainability, the broad societal role of dentistry, and the profession's public image. Five nominated theses will be announced on 9 June 2026.

Prize structure and voting

The award can be given to multiple students. First place receives 1000 euros, second place 500 euros, and third place 300 euros. If multiple winners are named in a category, the prize money is divided. In addition to the jury prize, a public choice award is offered, decided by vote. Details on voting will be announced when the nomination period begins. This year marks the 20th edition of the KNMT Bachelor Thesis Award. Last year, Lois Deckers and Laura Heijblom from Rijksuniversiteit Groningen won for their thesis on virtual reality and conventional exposure therapy in treating dental anxiety.
