Tandarts Bouke de Vries retired on 1 May 2026 after a career in dentistry. The move allows him to focus on his voluntary roles as chair of Christelijk Gemengd Koor Canticum Novum, a church choir with 35 members, and co-founder of Muziektheater De Ontmoeting, a converted church in Rozenburg that hosts multiple music groups.

Singing as respite from dental practice

De Vries has sung for forty years and has chaired the choir for nearly a decade. He describes singing as a way to set aside daily concerns and achieve mental focus. The choir specializes in classical church music, including works by Schubert, Mozart, Bach, and Fauré. De Vries credits singing with helping him find balance during his years managing a dental practice alongside raising four daughters. He notes that the arts world and its practitioners differ markedly from his life as a dentist, and he values that contrast and diversity.

Building community through voluntary leadership

De Vries established committee structures within the choir to distribute tasks and build engagement. The group raises funds through activities such as baking traditional Dutch oliebollen and ijzerkoekjes. Muziektheater De Ontmoeting, which he helped establish, operates entirely on volunteer effort and hosts rehearsals for a men's choir, women's choir, harmonie, and pop choir. The venue is a converted church that has become a cultural hub in Rozenburg, his hometown near Rotterdam. De Vries received a civic honour ten years ago from the then-mayor of Rotterdam in recognition of his community contributions.
