The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) presented its annual awards on 21 March 2026 during its General Assembly, honouring three researchers and clinicians for their contributions to periodontology, oral-systemic health, and the global periodontal community.

International recognition for oral-systemic research

Professor Purnima Kumar of the University of Michigan received the EFP International Eminence Award for her work linking the oral microbiome to systemic diseases. Chair of the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, Kumar has authored over 100 scientific publications and leads a long-standing NIH-funded research programme in microbial ecology. Her research has advanced understanding of how microbial dysbiosis and inflammation connect oral health to overall wellbeing, and she has held leadership roles in international scientific organizations and editorial boards.

Advances in oral microbiology and periodontal therapy

Professor Marc Quirynen of KU Leuven in Belgium received the Distinguished Scientist Award for decades of research in oral microbiology, periodontal therapy, and halitosis. His work has clarified the role of oral bacteria in periodontal diseases and improved diagnostic and therapeutic approaches used in clinical practice. Quirynen has been a prominent figure in the European periodontal community and regularly contributes to major international congresses including EuroPerio.

Service and federation development

Professor Monique Danser of Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) received the Distinguished Service Award for her sustained commitment to the EFP and the periodontal community. She served two terms as EFP Treasurer, contributing to the federation's development and stability. As both researcher and clinician, Danser has authored studies on oral hygiene and periodontal health, and her long-standing engagement has strengthened international collaboration within periodontology.
