The European Federation of Periodontology attended the official launch of the Cyprus Declaration on Oral Health in Europe on 12 May 2026 in Athens, Greece. The declaration, coordinated by the Alliance for a Cavity-Free Future, calls for oral health to be recognized as an essential component of overall health and integrated into wider European health policies and healthcare systems.

Why oral health integration matters for European healthcare

The declaration emphasizes that collaboration between healthcare professionals, policymakers, researchers, educators, and public-health stakeholders is necessary to improve oral-health outcomes across Europe. The EFP, represented at the event by treasurer Andreas Stavropoulos, has long highlighted the connection between oral health and general health. Professor Stavropoulos noted that the declaration helps raise awareness of oral health's importance, encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration, and promotes integration into broader healthcare policies and systems across Europe.

Placing oral health on Europe's public-health agenda

The Cyprus Declaration aims to strengthen coordinated action on oral-health promotion and disease prevention while elevating oral health's position on the European public-health agenda. The initiative brings together leading European and international experts and organizations in support of these goals.
