Access to same-day or next-day dental care during regular hours

A KNMT survey of December 2025 asked Dutch adults with natural teeth about how quickly they could see their own dentist during regular opening hours when experiencing tooth pain. Of 1,877 respondents with natural teeth, 1,794 had a regular dentist. Among those with a regular dentist, 21% reported being able to visit on the same day they experienced pain, 26% expected to be seen within two days, and 13% anticipated waiting longer than two days. However, 40% of respondents could not estimate their access time, mostly because they had never experienced tooth pain.

Actual access times exclude patients uncertain about appointment availability

When excluding the 40% of respondents who could not estimate their access time, the figures shift substantially. Among patients with a clear expectation, 35% can reach their dentist on the same day of pain onset, 42% within two days, and 23% only after three or more days. This data reflects patient perception of appointment availability rather than actual dental practice capacity or guarantee of immediate access.
