The University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine received $3.7 million to build a specialty clinic for patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The new Specialty Care Clinic will feature eight operative units, wheelchair accessibility including a tilt mechanism, an accessible panoramic x-ray machine, and sensory-friendly treatment rooms.

Clinic design and patient accommodation

The facility addresses barriers that prevent many patients with developmental disabilities from accessing standard dental care. Eight operative units provide capacity for concurrent treatment, while the wheelchair tilt and accessible imaging equipment reduce physical and mobility challenges. Sensory-friendly rooms accommodate patients who experience sensory sensitivities or anxiety during dental procedures.

Expanding access to specialized dental services

Dental schools and teaching clinics serve populations often underserved by private practice. This investment at University at Buffalo expands training opportunities for dental students in treating patients with complex medical and behavioral needs, while simultaneously increasing availability of specialized care in the region.
